Full Version: Downgrading Vaio NR21Z to XP

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to downgrade a vaio nr21z from vista (EUGH!) to Xp Professional, but I'm having issues.

Basically, it won't pick up my SATA drive, because XP doesn't have the drivers built in, so I've been onto the Intel website for a browse.

I'm almost certain I've downloaded and extracted the right files (the .inf) files from the Intel website.

However, when I'm slipstreaming with nLite, it comes up with a big list of drivers which I can choose to install, and I'm not sure which one(s) I should go for..?

The list is as follows:

"Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver"
"Intel AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH8R/DH/DO SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH9R/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller"
"Intel® PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 4 Port"
"Intel® PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port"
"Intel® PCH SATA AHCI Controller"

If anyone could assist me in choosing the right one, I'd greatly appreciate it.

If it helps, the laptop runs on the Intel 965GM chipset.

Cheers.
these are the correct drivers that you need.

thats the standard set used by intel.
if you slipstream these on to a xp install disk it will make your install alot more easy.
when slipsteaming remember its only the files you need not the whole folder.
this is a very good guide on slip streaming

once xp is installed you may run in to some trouble with a few drivers if you do please post back and i will see what i can do for you.

little tip don't upgrade to sp3 for xp till you have your sound up and running.
stick with sp2 with all other updates installed only.
its also a good idea to update your direct x a.s.a.p as some newer drivers need the new version in order to run.
Hi Davey, thanks for your reply.

I've downloaded those drivers, however they still seem to contain the drivers which almost every driver pack contains, including the .zip that you posted for someone wanting to do the same thing with a different laptop with the same chipset. (http://davesdrivers.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=347)

So anyway, when I'm using nLite, and I go for 'Select Driver' and target your unziped file. And there's two .INF files. "iaAHCI" and "aiStor". I'm assuming I should go for "iaAHCI", which contains the SATA drivers. But after that, after clicking next, I still get the same list of drivers as my first post. I'm guessing I need the Intel® ICH8M-E/M driver, as this seems to be the right one for my chipset.

So I've tried using that and integrating it and making a .ISO file and burning it to a disc, but it still doesn't work. When XP Professional is loading files during the startup to the installation, it does say it's loading the driver, so I'm fairly sure now that I have the wrong driver.

If you could advise me which one to try, I'd very much appreciate it.

Regards.
you should really add al the files from that intel download.
what i have done is download the pm965 chipset drivers for you and removed the readme and other carp files.

every file in this zip on the bottom of this post needs to be slipped streamed in to your xp disk.
its not a case of just pick one file and leave the rest out because the other files contain info on the chipset its self such as what pci lane the sata drive is on e.t.c

if it still fails after doing this go in to your bios call up the sata and tell it to use ide mode and then see if the install will complete.
Hi Davey.

Thanks again for your reply.

I've tried slim streaming every file in the installation at the same time, and it still doesn't pick up any HDDs.

Can't do that in the BIOS, there's no option to, it's a really simple BIOS setup.

Any other ideas to try?

Regards.
ok just to make sure we are not banging our heads on a wall here.
does the bios list the hard drive ?

if you can get your hands on a usb floppy drive you can try the good old push F6 to install those drivers.
Yep, it does.

"Hard Disk Drive: 250GB".

That's the correct info.

Right, I'll see if I can.
Hi,

I've now worked out the it couldn't install because it was 70% bad sectors. So I've replaced it, and gone for vista ultimate 32bit instead.

Works fine, everything's good, except the fan doesn't spin.

Now, I'm not sure such things as fan drivers exist, but if there is, I don't have one. SpeedFan doesn't pick up any fans attached and in device manager there is an unknown device which windows can't find drivers for.

I'm not sure if this is it, but there's a whole heap of Sony VAIO tools, apparently there's a fan control one in there too, however I can't get any of them to work. Should I try harder at that, or is there a basic thing I'm missing here? Hardware is all fine.

Regards.
yes your over looking one thing and that is the motherboard power control.

it controls the cpu fan and any others you may have in the laptop.
it should be pre set in your bios layout at what temp the cpu can reach before the fan starts to spin.
most laptops are like that these days to cut the noise level and to help battery power.

keep a eye on the cpu temp, i would think that fan should come on around the 50-60 oC mark.

my dell xps wll only switch its fans on around the 50 oC mark anything below that and they won't switch on even if i tell them too in the dell control panel.

how on earth did you get a hard drive with 70 % bad secctors ?
normally when they reach about the 10 % mark they fail to work
