Hp do not list what your main chipset is.

I have a feeling it may be a nvidia for some sort but i am unable to pin it down.

please look in the download section on bottom of the forum.
under software download and install everest trial on this compaq.

with the program running look in the left hand list for motherboard , click the little + next to it then click chipset.

please post back with what everest lists and what windows you are running.

ok that laptop is running the nforce 2 chipset.
this should be the correct set of drivers for all your problems.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.17.html

if this fails to get you out of trouble i will try and find the HP version for you but those are the most up to date drivers listed at nvidia.

ok quick run over hp support site and this seems to be the driver listed for models with the nforce 2 chipset.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...wk-43245-1

please try the direct driver from nvidia first before you try the hp version as nvidia are more up to date.

Have downloaded both it has sorted out the SM bus controller issue but doesn't seem to have sorted the Ethernet controller out

in the device manager for hardware there is still a yellow question mark through it and it does not recognise the device or manufacturer.

ok try doing this.
click start mycomputer , open your c drive
look for the folder nvidia / nforce 15.17

open that folder and look for the Ethernet controller folder.
right click on that and select copy.
now go back to your desktop and again right click this time select paste.
this will copy the Ethernet controller driver from the nforce chipset over to your desktop.
now use device manager and right click on the problem controller.
select update driver.
don't let windows auto search, choose the driver to install.
browse to that folder and click next.
windows should load the correct driver for you.

if this does not work i will try hp again but your lan is not listed in the support pages.

no joy i'm afraid, frustrating as all the other NVidia drivers have worked a treat

that is a bit heavy reading, hp do list this as built in the nvidia chipset drivers.

its also listed else where as mcp Ethernet controller.
to save time i have ripped the driver out of the package for you.
look on the bottom of this post and you will see a winzip file.
download and unpack that file fully then try loading it from device manager.

Attached Files
.zip   mcpEthernet.zip (Size: 49.12 KB / Downloads: 232)

that is a older chipset i will have to check with nvidia to see if they ever updated that or not.

but its good to know that old driver still helps out when all else fails
