you need to load windows xp with service pack 2 only.
if you upgrade straight away to service pack three it can become almost impossible to get some HD sound
cards running.
i will take a look at that toshiba specs for you and try and work out what conexant sound it is.

just remember to do the following as it will help a great deal.
clean install of windows xp with service pack two only
install your main motherboard drivers and the lan driver.
go online and update direct x
then load the microsoft UAA driver, this is the important part as it tells xp abbout HD sound chips
without it xp is thick and can't read the pci express lane the sound card is on.

i will post back with what i can find for you.

your one of the lucky few people really as tosh list the sound card driver for this model with xp.

follow my advice above on which order to install things and i will now give you a list of drivers direct from tosh site.

sound card http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-file...151533.zip

main chipset drivers ( mtherboard drivers ) http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-file...105323.zip

video card http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-file...143703.zip

lan card driver http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-file...075406.zip

and a quick link to the microsoft UAA driver http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867.exe yes i know thats a hp driver but it will install on your machine.

now please remember to load up the UAA driver before you try the conexant sound card driver or it could go wrong again.

all other downloads for that machine can be found here things like hotkeys , bluetooth ( if fitted ) wifi e.t.c

hi davey

i got most of the drivers from this site which is the same http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com
i got the chipset driver also from the tosh site but my usb ports stopped working so has to system restore i also got the sound driver from tosh site but still no sound.

So you reccomend i update my direct x and the microsoft uaa driver then the sound should work so will try and se how it goes.

when you have HD audio there really is a correct and a wrong order in which to install the drivers.

correct way to do it is like this

xp sp2 only
motherboard drivers
lan driver
direct x
microsoft UAA
conexant sound
then the rest of the drivers in any order you wish.

you can also check the following
go in to your bios and make sure the audio is enabled.
check in device manager for unknown devices
I will try and find a spec sheet layout for that laptop and then see what the chipset is.
intel might be more up to date then toshiba on that so i will check.

I have a had a few case's on the site where the conexant sound chip has given up the ghost
or the motherboard has got a fault, its worth keeping that in mind if you keep loosing usb support
and still can't get the sound to work.
faulty chipsets can play really silly games with a laptop and pc and really drive you crazy.

another thing is firewalls and anti-virus, third party firewalls, anti-virus should not be installed till you have the pc or laptop fully running with all its drivers installed for the simple reason they can and do block driver install's
