SATA Drivers for XP Install on HP dv2550se
Hi,

I have a HP dv2550se laptop with Vista installed. I really want to install XP on it too. (I know that generally XP should go on first and then Vista but I don't have any Vista disk and I think I can get Vista to boot after installing XP with Vista Boot Pro or something similar). The laptop has an SATA drive which I've never had before so my XP install cd doesn't work. I think I can include the drivers for it on a custom install cd though... Is this true? If so, can anyone help me find the right drivers? Here, from the Vista device manager, are the device names I think are relevant:

Under Disk drives:
ST9160821AS (I think that's Seagate)

Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers:
Intel 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
Intel ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controller 2850

Under Storage controllers:
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator

Please let me know if I can provide any more useful information.
Thanks for your help!

the laptop is based on the intel express 965 chipset.
the sata install drivers can be downloaded from intel at this link.
( towards the bottom of the page )
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_r...bmit=Go%21

now the best way to install these is to use usb floppy drive as the intel program will make the disk for you and xp looks for a floppy as default.

Thanks for your quick reply! I presume it's number 9 in the search results? I don't have a USB Floppy Drive. Is it possible to extract the drivers and include them on a custom install cd?

Thanks again!

you will find that xp will look for a floppy disk " a" when you try to install those drivers.
you can try putting them onto a bootable cdrom, but xp may not look at the disk and keep asking you to put in a floppy,
I did try once to put them onto a usb memory pen but xp did not want to install from that disk.

Thanks again! I think I can integrate them with nlite. I've done things like that before. I just need to get them out of the .exe. Maybe I could make a floppy on my desktop with the Intel tool and then copy them off the floppy? Is there an easier way to extract them from the .exe? Do you think those are the only drivers I need for the XP cd to recognise the hard drive?

Cheers!

I cheated for you Grin

I just made the floppy on my desktop, copied all files from that floppy and put them in to one folder and zipped it.

you will find it on the bottom of this post.

should be all you need to install xp.

now if you want to do a dual boot but keep vista please follow this guide which i have followed myself once and it does work ,
just don't rush it read and do at the same time if its possible, that way you can double check on what your doing.

Thanks very much! I really appreciate your help! I had already done the same thing myself though. I made the floppy with the Intel tool and copied them back to the hard drive as I suggested above. I didn't know the tool actually contained the drivers initially - I thought it would ask me to point it at them and then create the floppy. It was easy to integrate the right driver (Intel 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller) on a custom install cd with nLite. XP installed with no problems using this cd. I used Vista Boot Pro to restore Vista's bootloader and add XP to the OS list. XP and Vista both boot now. I just have to find some other drivers for XP... the following are missing drivers according to XP's Device Manager. I've written what each is or what I think each is in brackets...

Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
(Conexant High Definition Audio)

Base System Device
Base System Device
Base System Device
(I don't know what these are)

Ethernet Controller
(Marvell Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller or perhaps Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. Probably the Marvell?)

Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
(HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP)

Network Controller
(Marvell Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller or perhaps Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. Not sure about Ethernet/Network controller really. Maybe Ethernet is the Marvell and Network is the Intel?)

SM Bus Controller
(I don't know what this is)

Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
(Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family)

I noticed this page on your forum... http://www.davesdrivers.com/forum/showth...hp?tid=322

Perhaps some of those drivers would be useful to me? If not, perhaps you could point me in the right direction? If I/we get everything working.. I'd be glad to post detailed instructions for others. Thanks again for all your help!!!

RE: SATA Drivers for XP Install on HP dv2550se
Ok so after a bit of digging around I got everything working except for these:

Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
(Conexant High Definition Audio)

Base System Device
Base System Device
Base System Device
(I don't know what these are)

Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
(HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP)

SM Bus Controller
(I don't know what this is)

Unknown Device
(I'm not sure if this just showed up or if I missed it the first time around)

Can you help me out on these ones? Cheers!

RE: SATA Drivers for XP Install on HP dv2550se
ok you have just run head long in to the same problems as everyone else with these laptops.

hp do not like you downgrading them so they are not much help.
have a read of the following post's
this is all the work i have done to date on this problem ( there is alot of reading sorry )

but before you carry on just make sure of the following.

you have service pack 2 installed on xp
direct x is fully up to date
motherboard drivers are install ( in your case thats intel express 965 inf file )

intel INF file http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_D...l&lang=eng

thats everything i have to date on this problem
http://www.davesdrivers.com/forum/showth...hp?tid=322
its worth trying some of those drivers once you have the above updated

use what vista knows. its holding all the keys to take the guess work out of your unknown device , base system device ( i think that the motherboard drivers )
